As our season begins to come to a close we now reach our All-Star selection process. Over many years TABB has developed a fine tradition and respect for our post season results. Our teams have been very competitive, often against leagues as much as four times our size. All-Star teams are composed of players selected from a pool of manager nominated players and will play under the strict rules of PONY Baseball. Players must be able to provide proof of residency (utility bill) within the TABB appointed boundaries and a valid copy of a birth certificate.
Selection - The Managers of the division, via a voting system, select the teams. This year TABB will play sanction under the new “and under” rule for Bronco, Mustang and Pinto. In Bronco, there will be a team that consists of only 12 year olds and another of 11 year olds. Mustang will have a 10 yr. old only team and a 9 yr. old team. Pinto will have an 8 yr. old only team and a 7 yr. old team. In Shetland, only one Red team will be picked and available for sanction play. TABB began developing the Shetland division five years ago and if there is enough interest by the Shetland families to make this commitment, once again a team will be sent to represent the league. While every attempt to ensure that the top players will be selected at each level, it’s not always those players who had the best statistics during the regular season. The managers put a lot of thought and discussion during selection while keeping the goal of assembling the 12 or more players who will make up the best team.
Play Rules - There are no minimum play rules that govern All-Star play. Additionally, sanctioned tournament rules allow for only 9 batters and player substitution rules are much stricter than regular season play. Playing time is generally the most difficult issue that parents, players and coaches deal with during the All-Star season. Often this is the first time a player or parent will have to deal with not being a starter and having to sit on the bench. Some players may sit out an entire game and have very little actual play time, however all players will enjoy the benefit of extensive practice and coaching. It is the TABB Boards’ opinion that playing time, while important, is only one component to a successful All-Star season. A favorable experience begins with the recognition of being chosen, the higher skill level developed and the growth of being part of a competitive team.
Team Participation – Time commitment and scheduling becomes fairly complicated; with teams competing in one and possibly two invitational tournaments prior to the start of sanction play. Sanction play usually begins early July and at some age levels even a bit earlier. Depending upon the strength of a particular team, play may extend into late July or early August. This requires a significant commitment and availability for practice, often daily, and game play from the second week of June through the end of sanction play. Because of this, we are asking all parents / players to respond to the questions below, to ensure that the composition of the teams do not suffer due to players being unavailable after being selected. Mustang and Bronco Families that have All-Star sanctions games at TABB are required to participate in Snack Shack and hosting duties.
